Building an Inclusive Pedagogy in Synchronous Online Learning Environments Focused on Social Justice Issues: A Case Study

In the spring of 2020, a global pandemic caused an immediate transition to online, synchronous learning platforms in much world. discussion-based classrooms, where students construct from material and their interactions with each other, shift posed new challenges educators students. This mixed methods action research case study focused on successes teaching university class about sensitive issues area educational equity using web-based platform. Over course two semesters, forty-eight pre-credential teacher education were surveyed regarding experiences taking part equity-focused discussions over Zoom Semi-structured interviews four instructors five student volunteers conducted add depth survey data. A key finding is that Students Color significantly less comfortable discussing race, gender, cameras than White Additional findings pointed race- gender-based preferences modes engagement material; use multi-component pedagogy including anonymous discussion boards, chat posts, group breakouts are suggested approaches for reaching all when engaging online sexuality.
